So why are they bleeding?
The most common reason why your gums are bleeding is because of gum disease, if this is caught early it is reversible with treatment. This highlights the importance of regular examinations, to ensure any sign of gum disease is in fact caught in the early stages. If the gum disease is left untreated and becomes advanced you could start to lose teeth.
Is flossing causing my gums to bleed?
Education is key when it comes to looking after your oral hygiene. Here at Williams Dental Care we pride ourselves in education and awareness to all new and existing patients with tips, tricks and debunking myths!
Over the years we have had many patients assume when cleaning in between the teeth with either floss, flossettes ( floss on handles) or TePe brushes ( little wire brushes) that this is the cause of bleeding gums to appear! This in fact is NOT the case. The bleeding is caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria which is causing irritation to the gums.
Whilst it can be normal for a little blood to occasionally appear after brushing or flossing, it is abnormal for persistent bleeding from your gums.
Are there any other factors to consider?
A change in hormones can also have an effect on your gum health , whether you're going through puberty, taking birth control, pregnancy or going through the menopause. The influx of hormones can increase the blood flow leading to inflamed or bleeding gums.
Diabetics are at greater risk of developing gum disease, this is due to the high blood sugar levels which cause damage to the blood vessels and can reduce the flow of blood and nutrients to your gum and bone. You're at a greater risk of infections like gum disease so it’s highly important to maintain your regular examinations and hygiene visits.
How to stop bleeding gums?
We recommend brushing your teeth 2 x Per day with the use of some interdental cleaning (cleaning in between the teeth) either floss or interdental brushes. It is vital you visit your dentist regularly and maintain any dental hygiene appointments where your oral health including gum health can be monitored.
